Volunteers Wanted !

We believe that the prison system can be a place of learning and healing for people who have caused harm. At this time, with the California budget crisis, most programs that were funded by the State have been cut. The vocational training that included wood shop, printing, bicycle repair, and other skills has been cut. The educational programs including GED have been cut. The arts program has been cut. At the same time the security budget has been increased. The prison system today consists mainly of warehousing human beings in a very stressful environment. No wonder the rate of recidivism is so high!

The only prison programs geared towards rehabilitation that have survived are the volunteer programs funded through the private sector. By volunteering in the prisons you will have an opportunity to give encouragement to those who really want to turn their lives around.

Most of us find that working in the prison is also a tremendous personal growth opportunity. The courage and devotion of some of the inmates is greatly inspiring.

We also have a need for people who would like to correspond with inmates who are interested in Buddhism or meditation or the peacemaker precepts.
